Sunday, the day of rest!

Sunday, February 2, 2014

We spent our first full day here exploring.  Had a leisurely morning, took a walk down to the Palapa Bar, it was too early for a Belikin!  There are lots of early birds here, so you get to greet lots of travels during your stroll.
The grader came by this morning!  So we now have a super highway to travel on!  It was smooth sailing for your cart ride into town.  On the way we stopped and picked up a delightful local girl, Katerina.  She was heading home to pick up her two year old daughter, Calina.  Katerina was a wealth of info about the town of San Pedro, where to go for groceries, local customs, it was a great encounter for us.  She suggested that we go to the town hall on Monday and get a month pass for the toll both as it was fairly inexpensive. Katerina had a wonderful smile and an upbeat personality!  She and Munchie were arranging play dates for her daughter and our little Gracyn!
Our drive around San Pedro was pretty cool, lots of local flavour.  The locals are very pleasant and friendly.  On the south side of town we picked up Brooke and her beau "Blackino".  Brooke moved down here about three months ago.  Her parents sold the business they had in Toronto for twenty years, sold everything and moved to San Pedro with a single suitcase!  Brooke said she came down with them for a vacation and stayed.  She is a hair stylist and is now working at the "Carole Goudreau Esthetic" salon (the owner is another expat Canuck!).  Her beau "Blackino" is a local entertainer and has a wonderful personality.  He is definitely in the right profession.

After dropping Brooke and Blackino at there place south of town we headed back and picked up another couple of gals that were headed for town.  Therese and Khadija are from Placentia and were here prompting their businesses.  Therese is a tour manager for Tracker Tours Belize and they offer just about any type of adventure you can think of; fishing, snorkel, diving, caving, island hopping, tubing, ruins, party cruises, the list goes on!  Khadija is an entrepreneur and designs and makes jewelery, The Treasure Box is on the mainland, and she was here
at the Victoria house selling her creations.
We stopped at one of the local markets for a few more staples (need some cold Belikin for my boys when they arrive!) and met Connie and Brian.  Connie is from Toronto and has been here since December.  Brian, her son, came down about three weeks ago from Sooke, BC.  He has been out doing some diving, and he and Connie have been mainland side exploring as well.  They rented a car and did a five day adventure up and down the mainland.  They said that Placentia south of Belize City is beautiful and significantly less expensive than the Cayes.
After loading up with our supplies (and Belikin!) we zipped home. We cached away our bounty from our foraging raid south of the bridge and iced the Belikin!  All was as the greater powers intended!  We had been told about a Superbowl party at Captain Morgans Bar up north towards "Lands End" (this is where the road quits!).  So we hopped into our ride and headed north.  Well far before reach the Captain's, we ran out of the freshly graded superhighway.  So to prevent any kidney damage we turned back and headed for the Palapa Bar.  Fate was kind to us!  The Palapa is just awesome.  Ivan the bartender and his crew were fantastic, the place was rockin for the Superbowl, the food was very good, the Belikin were icy and Munchie sampled one of the drinks of the day, "The Panti Rippa".  She said it was very tasty.  She did finish off the night with a cup of the Goose on the rocks!  The Palapa will definitely be a regular hangout for us.  Very laid back, friendly and lots of visitors from all over!  We headed home at half time and only watched into the beginning of the fourth as it was pretty plain what the outcome would be.  We called it an early night and went to sleep serenaded by the gentle breeze and rhythmic lapping of the surf.
